Introduction lesson to Voting Behaviour and the Media This lesson introduces students to the concept of studying voting behaviour and examines factors which may affect voting behaviour. The idea is that students are then given case studies to produce and present on an individual election. Includes powerpoint on intro lesson which covers 1979 and 1997 key case studies as an overview of what happened in each election. Debate on the question “1979/1997 elections were lost by the government rather than won by the opposition” examination of Valence Voting and brief introduction of other theories. Detailed statistic booklet on General Elections since 1979 Template sheet for students to make notes on each election during Presentations with example for 1945 Election. Edexcel ALevel Politics Component 3 USA Politics Comparative Topic 4 Supreme Court and Civil Rights This is my Introduction lesson to the Court and key terms e.g. Stare Decisis, Loose/ Strict Constructivism and Originalism. Includes a key profile of the current court for a research homework and how they ruled on key cases e.g. Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Board of Health and New York state rifle assoc. v Bruen which cover key aspects of the divisive issues in the USA today e.g. abortion rights, gun control, voting rights, immigration and campaign finance. All the SCOTUS cases I cover are useful case studies for other topics due to the synoptic nature of the ALevel course, this helps students to join the dots. This case study is a 2 page word document which includes infographics and maps as well as detail of several key Supreme Court decisions regarding abortion since 1973 landmark Roe v Wade decision. EG Casey v Planned Parenthood and of course Dobbs v Jackson. It is a standalone but fully editable word doc resource. PNG images are for visual purposes only. I use this as part of my unit on the US constitution and evaluating how effectively it protects rights and also by unit on the Supreme Court as part of evaluation of Court as policy makers, Judicial Activism and ideological balance of the court.

Updated with modern examples e.g. a detailed case study showing the evolution of abortion rights issue in USA which can be used to address and discuss the flaws with the blend of vague and specific language. This is my lesson 5 on Congress (Edexcel) and examines the changing role and powers of Congress over time in the USA. Starter quiz and debate colour coding sheet on the debate on whether Congress is more of a WATCHDOG or LAPDOG in oversight of executive branch. Examines changing role/ powers with such context as the era of the 13th Amendment, 1980s Party Polarisation and Trump with the deep factional divides within the GOP. Also examines the “TRump effect” on Congressional elections since 2016. Includes article updates on: Can Congress pass legislation with a divided government? and The state of Partisanship in congress in 2023. Examines how independent the SCOTUS is and arguments for and against. Includes case studies on nominations of Amy Coney Barrett and Ketanji Brown Jackson for students to research, key examples from the past 75 years, video links to explainers/ examples and an essay plan on the question: Evaluate the view that the nomination process for the Supreme Court is fit for purpose.
